WHAT&WHO
What is bariatric surgery?
Bariatric surgery is a procedure that alters the intestinal tract, transforming the way the body absorbs food. There are two main bariatric surgical techniques: the Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Technique (RNY) and the Lap Band Adjustable Gastric Banding System.
Through an RNY procedure, surgery reduces the size of the stomach, thus limiting the amount of food intake. Through a Lap Band surgical procedure, an adjustable band is placed around the upper portion of the stomach, which also reduces the amount of food your stomach can hold. The Lap Band procedure is the least invasive surgical weight loss procedure. Both the Lap Band and RNY procedures are offered at the Nash Surgical Weight Loss Center.
Who is a candidate for bariatric surgery?
Not everyone who is overweight is a candidate for bariatric surgery. Only those who are 100 pounds or more overweight and are willing to make long-term lifestyle changes should consider bariatric surgery. Patients must make a sincere, lifelong commitment to use the gastric bypass operation as a tool for controlling obesity — not as a cure. While surgery will limit absorption of food, making it easier to sustain a healthy weight, much of your success will depend upon the choices you make.
The news is everywhere — in the papers, on television and in magazines — more and more Americans are severely overweight, putting them at high risk for serious health complications. In the United States, 26 percent of the population are obese — a figure that has doubled since 1980.
The mantra of diet and exercise is also everywhere, but for many people, diet and exercise simply aren’t enough, and even the most diligent efforts may not be met with success. The fight against obesity isn’t just about being thinner — it’s about being healthier. Those who are obese are at a greater risk for diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke.
If you are 100 pounds or more overweight, you may qualify for bariatric surgery. The Nash Surgical Weight Loss Center can provide the tools you need to find a healthier you.

“Everything in the hospital from medical equipment to décor is brand new and state-of-the-art. The people there were absolutely wonderful, and the very best in their respective fields. I’m not exaggerating when I say that every single person that I met and worked with was terrific. I never wanted for a single thing, and they were ahead of me on everything. …they literally treated me like a treasured family member, and I will never forget them. They honestly expressed a true desire to know all about me and my life…it was so very comforting. …having my surgery there was one of the most positive experiences that I have ever had. I would recommend this hospital to anyone and everyone. You most assuredly won’t regret it.”
