What is bariatric surgery?
Bariatric surgery is used to assist people in improving their health and quality of life by using surgical intervention for weight reduction. The two most common procedures are the gastric bypass with Roux-en-Y and the adjustable gastric band. The gastric bypass reduces the amount of food one can eat by creating a small stomach pouch and also decreases the amount of caloric absorption by “bypassing” a part of the small intestine. The adjustable gastric band is a procedure that places a “band” around the upper portion of the stomach, thus creating a smaller area to accept food. This procedure results in small amounts of food being consumed.
Who is a candidate for bariatric surgery?
Not everyone who is overweight is a candidate for bariatric surgery. General criteria include one of the following and may vary by insurance carriers: 1) At least 100 pounds overweight 2) BMI (Body Mass Index) of 35 to 39 with one or more significant health problems, 3) BMI of 40 or greater. Individuals also need to be willing to make long-term lifestyle changes.
